Getting Started
Welcome to your new Virtual Server. iServer has created the
resources in this "Getting Started" section of our web site
especially for our new Virtual Server administrators. We
hope that these resources will help you gain a better
understanding about how to use your new Virtual Server.
You will also want to become acquainted with the iServer
Virtual Server Administrator Handbook (see the Reseller Backroom
section below for more information about how to download the
Handbook).
Easy Steps For Using Your Virtual Server
The fundamentals necessary to creating a functional Internet presence
with your new iServer Virtual Server System are outlined in our
"Easy Steps"
documentation. This is an excellent resource for first time iServer
customers.
Your Email Configuration Letter
After your iServer Virtual Server System is setup, you will
receive an email
configuration letter from our Order Processing Department.
This letter contains important information about your new Virtual
Server. A sample configuration letter is shown.
Introduction to the Reseller Backroom
As a new iServer client, it is important for you to become familiar
with our "Reseller Backroom". The Reseller Backroom contains a set
of useful interfaces, diagnostics tools, and technical information
that are described in our
introduction to the
iServer Reseller Backroom. Understanding how to use the Reseller
Backroom will help you to administrate your Virtual Server(s).
Check Your Domain Name Registration Status
If you requested a domain name with your new Virtual Server which
we can register for you (such as a ".com", ".net", or ".org" domain
name), you can check your
domain name registration status with our convenient on-line form.
Transferring Your Domain Name to iServer
If you currently have a domain name registered that you would like to use
with a new iServer Virtual Server System, but it is currently being hosted
by another provider, then please refer to the
Domain Name Transfer
guidelines we have provided for your use.
Remote Administration
iServer has developed several methods which you can use to
remotely manage
your Virtual Server. These utilities include the
iServer authored web content manager and file browser,
iManager,
and remote site administration utility,
iRoot,
which allow you to manage and maintain the content of your
web site with ease and efficiency.
Help on HTML and Web Design
If you are interested in finding out more on the HyperText
Markup Language (HTML), you may find our collection of links
to some handy tutorials, style guides, and general information useful.
These links are compiled in our
HTML and web design
resource library.
Uploading Files to Your Virtual Server
A simple step-by-step presentation about what you need to know and what
you need to do to upload files
to your Virtual Server is given. Though this document highlights
uploading content to your Virtual Server with an FTP client, it also
discusses other methods briefly.
Using Telnet or SSH
The secure environment under which your Virtual Server operates makes
it possible for iServer to offer
Telnet and SSH access
(something most other providers are skittish about). By using a Telnet
or SSH client, you can connect to your Virtual Server from anywhere in
the world and login as if you were sitting at the console.
Basic UNIX Commands
With more than 20 years of research and development behind it, the UNIX
operating system is extremely powerful. Harnessing that power may at
first seem somewhat daunting. However, we have created a document to
help you: "Ruling the
World with Basic UNIX Commands". This document provides instruction
about how to use several commands commonly used to administer your Virtual
Server. With a little practice, you can easily master these commands and
use them with confidence.
Web Server Stat Reports
No doubt, you are at least curious about the traffic that your web site attracts. More likely,
your business depends on obtaining detailed information about your web site traffic, and
adapting to that information. The iServer Virtual Server system allows you to easily
obtain
statistical reports of traffic at your web site.
Retrieving File Backups
As an iServer Virtual Server Administrator, you have the luxury of
restoring files directly from our primary and secondary backups (on disk)
as well as requesting file retrieval from the tertiary backups (on tape).
iServer has authored a file retrieval program title
"getback"
which will walk you through the file retrieval process step by step.
Accessing iServer Support
The iServer Technical Support Staff is the most responsive, knowledgeable,
polite (not to mention brave, clean, and reverent) group of people around.
Check out the iServer Technical Support home page,
it is full of useful information and answers to commonly asked questions.
Solution of the Month
The iServer Support Staff invites you to review the latest
Solution of the Month. This
monthly feature is aimed to help you understand and use your
Virtual Server better and is chosen based on common questions
sent to the Support Staff during the previous month. Past
Solutions of the Month are also available.
Virtual Server Extensions
The iServer Virtual Server System can easily be extended to
support popular technologies such as Microsoft FrontPage, Secure
Socket Layers (SSL), mSQL, autoresponders, Macromedia Shockwave,
RealAudio, CyberCash and many others. Our
Server Extension Index
explains how you can install and support these extensions on your
Virtual Server.
CGI Library
The iServer CGI library was created to
offer basic CGI script solutions to our customers. The CGI library
includes friendly advice and help setting up CGI scripts such as
imagemaps, send comments forms, guestlists, search engines, counters,
and more. The scripts are absolutely free and include source code.
Enjoy!
Java and JavaScript Collection
Java applets can be easily installed on the Virtual Server System.
A Java applet can really add appeal and zest to your web presentation.
There are almost an innumerable amount of Java applets available on
the web (you typically wouldn't need to write your own). For example,
sites such as Gamelan hold thousands of applets. The iServer
Java and
Javascript Collection is a
sampling of some very functional applets and scripts, each includes
easy to follow installation instructions.
Contributed Programs
Most third party applications are also supported by the iServer Virtual
Server System. In our "Contrib Library",
we have compiled installation instructions for a sizeable array of
popular programs including Majordomo, PGP, Architext Excite, WWW Count,
and many of Matt's Scripts (plus many others).
E-mail Us Your Questions
Please do not hesitate to email
the iServer Support Staff should you have any questions. We value your
comments and desire to help you in any way possible. Our Support Problem
