History of iServer
The idea of a fully functional Virtual Server was first formulated in
1994 by Stacey Son. Stacey realized that a dedicated server solution
was far too expensive and resource intensive to be feasible for small
businesses. Multiplexing a single dedicated server into a system of
multiple virtual machines would allow several small businesses to
distribute the cost of the hardware, software, a system administrator,
and bandwidth. Each virtual machine or Virtual Server would have its
own IP address, domain name, web server with complete logs and
configuration files, ftp server, pop server, and smtp server.
In the Spring of 1995, Stacey finished developing the Virtual Server
System and began soliciting beta testers. The fully functional Virtual
Server System was an instant success and demand quickly began to grow.
Stacey and four others, Eric Thompson, David Sharp, Rus Berrett, and
David Barnes founded Internet Servers Inc on September 1, 1995 with a
client base of about 50, a couple of fish
1, and T1 connectivity to the Internet.
The iServer Reseller Program was organized by Eric and newcomer Cary
Son, iServer's Chief Financial Officer. Soon after that, growth
burgeoned by leaps and bounds. T1 connectivity became inadequate and
DS3 connectivity was obtained. As growth has continued, iServer has
established relationships with Sprint, MCI, and UUNET to obtain redundant
DS3 connectivity to the Internet.
iServer has continued to be the leader in Virtual Server technology
on the Internet. Today, iServer hosts well over 25,000 domain names,
making it one of the largest hosting companies in the world.
Additionally, iServer has developed a Reseller network of over
1,600 individuals selling iServer's Virtual Servers in over 60
countries.
1 - All of the iServer machines are
named after fish: salmon, bass, pike, walleye, catfish, perch, etc.
