Significance of the Trace Route

The Internet is a large and complex aggregation of network hardware, connected together by gateways. The traceroute utility, (traceroute(8)), attempts to trace the route an IP packet would follow to some remote internet host. The traceroute program indicates how "close" you are to a host. The fewer gateways or "hops" between you and the remote host the better. Asterisks "*" or exclamation marks "!" indicate possible packet loss along the route.

The traceroute above indicates how close iServer is to "38.107.191.97". If your remote host (i.e. your ISP) is connected to the Intenet via the MCI, UUNET, or Sprint fiber backbone, then you are very likely just a few "hops" away from our site. Because iServer is connected to the fiber backbones of these major Internet carriers, millions of others are also just a few "hops" away from your site (if it were hosted on one of our Virtual Servers). This can be a significant advantage for you and your business. Fewer "hops" translates into faster access times and less wait for your clientele as they access your on-line services.
